PBS News Hour posted to their YouTube channel yesterday a 16-minute video of James Taylor’s performance at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, shortly after the real thing was broadcast live.
James performed “Carolina In My Mind,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”. Several news outlets have reported on a couple of comments James made during his appearance. His crack about not talking to an empty chair is a reference to Clint Eastwood’s bizarre speech at last week’s Republican National Convention in Florida, where the actor held an improvised debate with a seated yet invisible President Barack Obama. The other moment is James pointing out, “I’m an old white guy, and I love Barack Obama”.
Politics aside, the most surprising moment might have been a rare trip-up during the intro to “You’ve Got a Friend,” something I don’t think I’ve ever heard him do. Even so, he carried on like a pro and had many attendees swaying and singing along.
