James Taylor covers Jesse Winchester’s “Payday” for tribute album

Jimmy Buffett’s record label Mailboat Records released this week Quiet About It: A Tribute to Jesse Winchester, which opens with a cover of “Payday” performed by James Taylor.

The album is initially only available on iTunes but a physical CD will be released September 25th and is currently available for pre-order.

“Payday” has also been covered by James Taylor’s eldest brother Alex Taylor for his excellent 1972 album Dinnertime, so you can’t help but wonder if this also serves as a tribute for Alex, who died in 1996. Quiet About It also features tracks by Elvis Costello, Little Feat, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, Allen Toussaint, and of course Jimmy Buffett.

Jesse Winchester is a respected singer/songwriter who first appeared in the ’60s and is still touring and making music after a brief scare of esophagus cancer last year. He has long been acclaimed by both music critics and musicians who have covered his songs. In 2007, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP. His last album was 2009’s Love Filling Station.
