Celebrated author, screenwriter and filmmaker Nora Ephron died at the age of 71 on June 26 due to pneumonia brought on by her acute myeloid leukemia.
Carly Simon‘s collaboration with Nora Ephron created the songs “Coming Around Again” and “Love of My Life”, among others. Roger Friedman’s Showbiz411 exclusively released a statement from Carly on Nora’s passing.
“Oh, it is a shock to the system. I hope I can find some of her emails dating back to the early nineties about “This is My Life” a movie that is not given the credit it should have. She gave me lines for my song (“you’re the love of my life”) the way she had for “coming around again”. She would get inside of the head of the character and do some channeling and I would add some rhythm and this and that. She had a gift for the specific, and could hone in on a character by giving me (in this case the songwriter) a word like ‘souffle’ and I added the verb ‘burn’ as in ‘burn the souffle’ and it says a whole lot more than what I could have cooked up alone for Meryl’s character to be feeling through song.”
Carly Simon was invited to contribute music to two of Nora Ephron’s films. Carly’s “Coming Around Again” and her arrangement of the children’s nursery rhyme “Itsy Bitsy Spider” were used for Nora’s second filmed screenplay, Heartburn. She also composed the film’s score. Released in 1986 and starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, the movie was directed by Mike Nichols and based on Nora’s 1983 book of the same name. Both songs were also featured on Carly’s comeback album from 1987, Coming Around Again. The title track was a Top 20 hit for Carly and the album went on to sell about 2 million copies. Carly also provided the soundtrack for Nora Ephron’s 1992 film This Is My Life, starring Julie Kavner. The movie, which was written and directed by Nora, uses Carly’s Adult Contemporary hit, “Love of My Life”, which was later re-recorded for Carly’s 2008 album This Kind of Love.
