Monday MP3: Greenfields, Golden Sands by Yusuf

Greenfields, Golden Sands by Yusuf

Somehow this popped into my head while walking around my neighborhood on Sunday. Then I realized I was walking on Greenfield Ave. Coincidence? Or just my lame subconscious? U-Decide!

This song closed out An Other Cup, the first pop music album in 28 years from the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens (now Yusuf). The first time I heard the song, I was sure it was a traditional tune or older song of some kind that he had resurrected, similar to what he did with “Morning Has Broken” on Teaser and the Firecat. But no, according to the liner notes it’s an original Yusuf composition. It’s got a real timeless feel. It also kind of reminds me of “Into White” from Tea for the Tillerman. It’s a really tender and classy conclusion to a fine album.

“Greenfields, Golden Sands”
(Yusuf Islam)

Greenfields and Golden Sands
Are all I need; are all I want
Let the wind blow hard, I don’t mind

A small house and an olive tree,
To keep and feed my family
Let the wind blow hard, I don’t mind

One day we’ll all realize, I’m not the only one
Just raise your eyes up and you’ll be gone, to those

Greenfields and Golden Sands
That’s all I need; that’s all I want
That’s all I really need
Let the wind blow hard, I don’t mind

One day we’ll all realize, I’m not the only one
Just raise your eyes up and you’ll be gone, to those

Greenfields and Golden Sands
Are all I need; are all I want
That’s all I need; that’s all I want
That’s all I need; that’s all I really want
