The CMT blog has some kind things to say about James Taylor’s new release Covers and the country songs he covers on it. There’s also a pretty good painting of James from the author’s sister.
I grew up in a house with only one stereo, but stacks and stacks of James Taylor albums. “Fire and Rain,” “Carolina in My Mind,” “Shower the People” and “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” were some of my favorites back then. But that’s all about to change.
Because now Taylor’s released a new album, Covers, complete with a few stand-out country songs. Not just your average Merle and Hank covers, though. He seems to have chosen songs made famous by people with very distinctive voices. Like “Some Days You Gotta Dance” (Dixie Chicks), “Why Baby Why” (George Jones) and “Wichita Lineman” (Glen Campbell). I’m not crazy about the new arrangements and the addition of some uncountry instruments, but I quickly forgive all that when I hear Taylor’s voice interpreting these country tunes.
